Publishing and Writing to Transform Lives

IFES World Assembly 2019 Seminar   

Step 1: Prewriting

Pre-writing is the activity that helps writers figure out what to write about. During Pre-writing answer the following:

a)     I’m thinking about this topic for my article or book writing project:

b)    My working title is:

c)     What is the premise or main proposition, which forms the basis for your book? State in one to two sentences.

If non-fiction: there should be a central problem, a solution, an application

If fiction: there should be a main character, a situation or a goal, an antagonist or a crisis

Test your premise. Ask at least 3 people you know if your premise is good or not.

d)    What is the main theme of the book or story? What are the secondary themes, if any?

e)     How is it different from other books published on this same subject? How will this book be unique? What new information or angle does this book or story present that hasn’t already been published?

f)      Why are you writing about?

g)    What inspired you?

h)    What is your main objective for writing this book? Finish the sentence: “The purpose of this book is to”

i)      Who is your target audience for this book? Who are you writing this for? List the primary and secondary markets.

Be more specific (male or female, age range, income level, occupation, where do they live, other demographics):

What are their needs, problems, challenges, likes and dislikes, feelings, emotions, etc. (psychographics):

j)      Name at least 5 people you know who fit your target audience demographic/psychographic profile:

k)     Why will your target readers want to read your book or story?

l)      How will your book impact that audience? Or how will your readers benefit from your book?

m)   What change will your book invoke in the reader?

n)    Why will people recommend your book to others?

o)    What formats should you use? (novel, nonfiction, comics, etc.)

p)    “I am qualified to write this book because:

q)    Who could possibly be my writing mentor?

r)     My deadlines are as follows:

s)     I plan to stir interest or create awareness on my book through (intended marketing efforts):
