나는 수년 동안 깊은 확신을 가지고 있었다. 바로 이 나라의 현대 기독교인들이 실제적인 거룩함(practical holiness)과 하나님께 온전히 자신을 드리는 삶(entire self-consecration to God)을 충분히 실천하지 않고 있다는 것이다. 정치(politics), 논쟁(controversy), 당파적 정신(party spirit), 세속적인 삶(worldliness) 등이 너무나 많은 사람들 안에서 생기 있는 경건함(lively piety)의 본질을 갉아먹고 있다. 개인적인 경건함(personal godliness)이라는 주제는 슬프게도 뒷전으로 밀려나고 말았다. 삶의 기준은 많은 곳에서 고통스러울 정도로 낮아졌다. “하나님 우리 구주의 교리(the doctrine of God our Saviour)”를 단장하고(adorning), 우리의 일상적인 습관과 성품을 통해 그것을 사랑스럽고 아름답게 만드는 것의 엄청난 중요성은 너무 많이 간과되어 왔다.

건전한 교리(sound doctrine)는 거룩한 삶(holy life)이 따르지 않으면 아무 쓸모가 없다. 아니, 쓸모가 없는 정도가 아니라, 오히려 해를 끼친다. 내가 굳게 느끼는 바는, 우리는 성경적인 거룩함(scriptural holiness)에 대한 철저한 부흥이 필요하다는 것이다.

그렇다면 진정한 실제적 거룩함(practical holiness)이란 무엇인가?
거룩함(holiness)이란 하나님의 마음(mind of God)과 같은 마음을 품는 습관(habit)이라 할 수 있다. 그것은 성경에 나타난 하나님의 뜻에 따라 이루어진다. 거룩한 사람(holy man)은 알고 있는 죄는 피하고, 알고 있는 계명은 지키려고 애쓴다. 그는 하나님을 향한 뚜렷한 성향(a decided bent of mind towards God)과 하나님의 뜻을 따르고자 하는 진심 어린 열망(a hearty desire to do His will), 세상을 기쁘게 하기보다 하나님을 기쁘게 하지 못할까 두려워하는 마음(a greater fear of displeasing Him than of displeasing the world), 하나님의 모든 길을 사랑하는 마음(a love to all His ways)을 갖는다.
거룩한 사람은 우리 주 예수 그리스도(our Lord Jesus Christ)를 닮기 위해 힘쓴다.

그렇다면 왜 거룩함(holiness)이 그렇게 중요한가?
• 첫째, 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 성경 속 하나님의 음성(the voice of God in Scripture)이 그것을 명백히 명령하고 있기 때문이다. (Matt. 5:20, 48; 1 Thess. 4:3; 1 Peter 1:15)
• 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 이것이 그리스도께서 세상에 오신 주요 목적 중 하나이기 때문이다. (2 Cor. 5:15; Eph. 5:25–26; Titus 2:14)
• 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 이것이 우리가 주 예수 그리스도(our Lord Jesus Christ)를 진정으로 믿는다는 유일하고 확실한 증거이기 때문이다. (James 2:17)
• 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 이것이 우리가 예수님을 진실로 사랑한다는 유일한 증거이기 때문이다. (John 14:15, 21, 23; 15:14)
• 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 거룩한 삶이야말로 다른 이들에게 선한 영향을 끼칠 수 있는 가장 확실한 방법이기 때문이다.
• 우리는 거룩해야 한다. 왜냐하면 이 땅에서 거룩하지 않다면, 우리는 결코 하늘(heaven)을 누릴 준비가 되지 않은 것이기 때문이다.

거룩함(holiness)은 하나님께서 믿는 자들에게 주시는 특별한 선물(His special gift)이다. 거룩함은 그분이 우리 안에 두신 성령(the Spirit whom He puts within them)을 통해 우리의 마음 속에서 이루어 가시는 역사(the work He carries on in their hearts)이다.


I have had a deep conviction for many years that practical holiness and entire self-consecration to God are not sufficiently attended to by modern Christians in this country. Politics, or controversy, or party spirit, or worldliness, have eaten out the heart of lively piety in too many of us. The subject of personal godliness has fallen sadly in the background. The standard of living has become painfully low in many quarters. The immense importance of ‘adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour’ and making it lovely and beautiful by our daily habits and tempers has been far too much overlooked… Sound… doctrine is useless if it is not accompanied by a holy life. It is worse than useless: it does positive harm… it is my firm impression that we want a thorough revival about scriptural holiness. (xvii-xviii)
What then is true practical holiness? … Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God, according as we find His mind described in Scripture… A holy man will endeavour to shun every known sin, and to keep every known commandment. He will have a decided bent of mind towards God, a hearty desire to do His will, a greater fear of displeasing Him than of displeasing the world, and a love to all His ways… A holy man will strive to be like our Lord Jesus Christ. Why then is holiness so important? … For one thing, we must be holy, because the voice of God in Scripture plainly commands it (Matt 5:20, 48; 1 Thess. 4:3; 1 Peter 1:15)… We must be holy, because this is one grand end and purpose for which Christ came into the world (2 Cor 5:15; Eph 5:25,26; Titus 2:14)... We must be holy, because this is the only sound evidence that we have a saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:17)… We must be holy, because this is the only proof that we love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. (John 14:15, 21, 23, 15:14) … We must be holy, because this is the most likely way to do good to others. … We must be holy, because without holiness on earth, we will never be prepared to enjoy the heaven. Holiness is His special gift to His believing people. Holiness is the work He carries on in their hearts by the Spirit whom He puts within them.
